On a quaint street in the basement of a modest semi-detached home, a Japanese-influenced spa inhabits an unassuming ash-clad volume. Inside, basalt stone tiles line the floors and walls of the bathing space, providing a stoic and elemental feel complemented by the hinoki bathtub and niche inlays.

Twin gables clad in stone are set behind a “z-girt” metal screen – a detail constructed out of recycled building material. The screen provides privacy to the second level terraces from the thoroughfare below while maintaining access to natural light.

An intervention to an existing Mock Tudor home emerged from the desire to improve access to natural light without sacrificing privacy. The volume subtracted from the centre of the existing house allows light to permeate across the entire interior, forming subtle connections between the heritage fenestration and the expansive glass openings of the addition.
